Sync-N-Charge cable

 Product: Sync-N-Charge USB cable.

 Price: $34.95.

 Company: Datanywhere (www.Datanywhere.com)

Datanywhere is well known among iPAQ user's for their great add-ons for your favorite PDA! They are the ones that first shipped the Dual Expansion pack in the US!!!!

Enter the new USB Sync-N-Charge cable. Selling for a mere $34.95, this cable makes it to my most wanted list for iPAQ items!

Sync-N-Charge   Sync-N-Charge

  • The product:

The Sync-N-charge cable is a simple 3 ft long USB cable that will not only allow you to synchronize your iPAQ with your desktop/laptop but it will also charge it using the USB 5V supplied power. In other words, no need for an extra AC adapter, simply plug one end in your computer and the other in your iPAQ and you're ready to go.

The cable is also very well constructed, meeting the USB standards (isolation, length...). It will securely plug into your iPAQ (you'll hear a click) and features a quick release button that will prevent your iPAQ from disconnecting (similar to the regular USB sync cable sold by Compaq for $49.00).

warning label   Sync-N-Charge
Good thing to remind you that you DON'T want the AC adapter plug-in at the same time!!!!

  • The test:
I wanted to know if the Sync-N-Charge cable was up to the charging capacity of the AC adapter. I decided to run several tests in order to verify this.

Sync-N-Charge   Sync-N-Charge   Discharged

  • The first test was to see the charge time when the iPAQ was plugged in, turned on (synchronized) with my desktop PC. After discharging the PPC (I waited until I received the low battery warning, which should be around 10% of remaining battery power) I plugged it in, and waited. The full charge was achieved after a mere 1 hour and 30 minutes. I did a backup run to double check it since it seemed to be short, but obtained almost the same results, with 1 hour and 29 minutes.

Test   Hooked up   the system
Here is my test unit..... yes when I'm doing things, I like to do it the right way.... check out the computer here.

  • For a comparison test, I did try recharging the iPAQ with the USB cradle and the factory AC adapter. The iPAQ was fully charged after 1 hour and 37 minutes!!! Wow, the Sync-N-Charge cable charges even faster!!!

Hooked up   Hooked up

  • The second test was recharging the PPC through the cable with the PocketPC off. Interestingly this took slightly longer than the first test: 1:41 minutes! I also double checked that but it seems that the iPAQ recharges faster when it is on!! Go figure!

 iPAQ turned off

  • Next was testing the unit with my ThinkPad. I only ran one test which was comparable to the second test, iPAQ off. Charging was finished after 1 hour and 41 minutes, just slightly more than with my desktop.

If you are like me and love USB functionality, and hot-swappable devices, you'll probably have somewhere around 10 USB devices plugged into your computer. I did try to connect the Sync-N-Charge cable to my USB powered hub but the computer would shutdown the USB ports each time I tried! I had to plug the cable directly into the computer (thank God I have 6 direct USB ports on my desktop!!!).

  • Conclusion:

The guys at Datanywhere really did their homework!!!!

This cable is just what mobile users needed. A cheap way to sync, and charge your iPAQ while on the road!!
Considering the fact that a USB cable for iPAQ will cost you $49.00 and an AC adapter another $28.00, buying the Sync-N-Charge cable from Datanywhere will save you some big $$$$!!!! Sure it might be a problem if you need to run many USB devices at the same time, but as far as I'm concerned there is little to complain about considering the capabilities of this cable!!!!
You can throw your Sync-N-Charge cable in your briefcase and go to work without having to worry about running out of battery! You'll now be able to synchronize your iPAQ at work or on the road, and recharge it at the same time.... Fantastic!!!

Finally, I'd like to thank Alex Carriles for sending me this test unit!!
