Digital Phone Card
Product:
Socket Digital CF Phone Card
Company:
Socket
Price:
$89-129
Socket
has been offering these CF cards for quite some time now. I had mine for almost
a year, and I have to say that it saved me from some trouble.

The
Kit:
The Digital
Phone cards come complete with a software CD that also includes some nice
little utilities. The Win9x,2000 drivers are also bundled on the CD, allowing
you to use the card with your laptop, thanks to the PCMCIA adapter (included
as well).

-
How
it work:
The Digital
Phone card is quite simply to use with your PocketPC. Simply plug in the
Type I CF card in the PocketPC slot, and you're ready to go.
You'll
then need to setup a DUN using your ISP information. Note that ISPs not
providing a direct DUN (i.e. if there is some kind of software to install
on your desktop) will not work easily on your PocketPC. You'll need to
first obtain the real password/username for your account, and also make
sure that your ISP allows you to do so.
Then
simply create a new connection, selecting the Socket Digital Card as modem,
and enter the phone number to be dialed. Double check your settings, and
plug in your cell phone.

The final
step is straight forward; enter your user name/password and log on.
That's
it!

Conclusion:
The Socket
Digital Phone Card is available for several different phone models (almost
any US phones), and will save you some precious time. I have been stuck
several times without a working laptop or most likely a non working DSL
line and used a wireless connection as a replacement.
The Socket
Digital Phone Cards are great emergency modems though I found them a little
bulky to use while on the road. You'll be able to enjoy wireless connections
anywhere between 10kbs to 20kbps but remember that pulling out the card
and setting it up isn't easy if you are walking!!!! Also the connections
aren't that efficient and will drop once in a while (it depends on where
your calling from and how well your ISP will be able to handle lower speed
calls!).

Also you'll
need a data-enabled phone; make sure you check with your wireless carrier
to see if this option is available. You'll also need to be in a digital
covered area in order for the data to be transmitted.
Finally,
you'll lose your CF storage card, which in some cases can be a problem....
Make sure you install your "online" applications on the device
itself and not on the storage card.
The Socket
Digital Phone Card can be used with the Dual Expansion Pack, which makes
it a little more attractive!
This product
comes at a reasonable price compared to other wireless solutions making
it even more attractive!!!!
