September
28th 2001:
I
talked about this new Expansion Pack a few weeks ago.
Well, here it is, coming to the US....
"Video/VGA Output
By connecting either a projector, a VGA monitor or an
analog device (TV, composite, S-Video) the user can achieve
a larger video display for presentation or demonstration
purposes directly from an iPAQ.
Video Input
Various video sources including VCR, VCD/DVD players,
and DSCs may be used as a video input source for the FlyJacket.
A user can either preview or record a full motion video
and grab 'snapshots'.
|
 |
Built-in
CF slot
The CompactFlash card expansion slot on the FlyJacket serves
as a useful and convenient solution for reading and writing
data to the iPAQ without the need to switch between several
packs.
Battery
The FlyJacket is equipped with a rechargeable Li-on battery
that provides it with self-sufficient power. The battery has
the advantage of charging directly from the iPAQ charger.
IR Remote
The bundled, pen-sized remote controller has been specifically
designed to perform the task of 'Page Up' and 'Page Down' for
Microsoft PowerPoint file presentations in conjunction with
the FlyJacket. Plus, the opposite end of the remote control
is equipped with Laser diode to serve as a pointer during presentations.
Availability
The FlyJacket packaging is being sampled now and will be available
in volume in mid-October 2001. The product is expected to be
available through the company's global sales team, as well as
selected on-line distributors at a $199 USD retail price."
Looking good!

September
26th 2001:
- Just
as a note:
Today, I just felt like a brick hit me in the head,
when I found out about comments from another news site about
smaller sites like PocketPCpower.net. I just wanted to clarify...
I cannot spend that much $$$ for hosting or website development
or a dedicated server or message board, I don't have that much
time to look for the latest news, and update the site, I'm not
a technical writer per say, I do quite a bit of reviews, and
above all, there really aren't many people helping me out (I'm
the only one working on the page though I do get some help from
other Pocket PC enthusiats for reviews)! I also find the need
to add news not as important since other Big Dogs are already
posting the "common" stuff!
So, if you think that the site is disappointing, then it's fine
with me! I'm not here to gain popularity/hits (the less the
cheaper...) but rather inform people and provide as much help
as I can on the passion I have for Pocket PCs!
I hope this is clear enough, and now, let's back to some real
news!

If you are planning on visiting France or Spain but
are not familiar with the language, you might want to consider
Mobilelearn, a spoken word application that will let you choose
preset sentences and automatically play them through the speaker.
I haven't tried it yet (iPAQ has gone for a RAM upgrade... more
about that soon) but I'll let you know as soon as I get the
chance to try it out! Check

- Why
yesterday's news was so limited?
Yesterday's
news was indeed quite limited! I just didn't have the
time posting anything more. I have been working on several
new reviews but mostly running some tests on Pocket PC
2002! Yes, this is it! My iPAQ has finally been upgraded
to the new OS. I must say, quite impressive. Microsoft
did a lot of work and Pocket PC 2002 is worth the wait.
I still have some concerns that I will soon share with

new models will most likely use a 206Mhz Strong-Arm (I'm shocked!),

using the beautiful screen of the EM500 series! Release is supposed
to take place sometimes in October (guess, that's going to be
my new PPC!).

This
is with difficulty that I am slowly starting to work on the
site again! For almost a week now, chaos has entered our lives.
There are no words to describe the terrible events that occurred.
Our deepest wishes go to all people that suffered losses in
this tragedy.
Being in NYC myself, I have to be honest and tell you that
I had (and still have) difficulties cooping with |
|
the
situation.
As I walked out of my apartment on Tuesday night, I could
see the smoke rising out of ground zero, streets emptied
out and the same look of despair on everyone's faces.
I shall always remember September 11 of the year 2001!
Now rescue efforts are undergoing, and with the hope of
finding survivors diminishing day by day, it is time to
think about the future. What will happen? As the President
of the United States mentioned, "we are at war".
I suddenly feel the blood rushing through my veins. This
is the time, time of revenge. No more innocent lives shall
be taken, no more terrorists shall remain on this earth.
I can't explain the anger that I have been feeling during
the past few days. I am glad of the true patriotism that
has filled our country, and the true hope of justice.
I have been thinking about what will happen, but as days
go by, the fear seems to intensify. Can this be real? I
haven't been sleeping very much since the crashes, and sometimes,
think that I might still be in a delirious state where I'll
be waking up and none of this would have happened.. THIS
IS REAL! We will now wait and see, hoping for the best...

That sounds very cool."Dual operation with 4-bank
architecture is employed in order to enhance flexibility. 8Mb

read/write operations, taking into account that the ratio of
code and data storage may vary form application to application.
In addition, while program or erase operation is carried out
in one of the four storage banks, read operation from any of
the other three storage banks is possible. Two 8Mb-storage banks
contain 4K-word x 8 boot sectors, covering conventional top-boot
and bottom-boot architecture in one product."

from Belkin:
I just found out about this today browsing through the
Belkin website: it is a USB charger for iPAQ. For less than
$20, you'll be able to recharge your iPAQ through USB and also
synchronize it(similar to the Sync-N-Charge cable reviewed here).
One great little feature is that it comes with cigarette lighter
adapter (I think)... so you can bring it on the road :)

- Enters
Pocket PC 2002:
This is already old news! I guess I should have try
to get myself invited at the Microsoft meeting on the West Coast...
Well, I was not!! :(
So for now, here are some pretty interesting
screen shots. For a complete review, go
here.
The most interesting features:
DRM5 compatible Reader, you'll be able to beam to Palm, cellphone
and pretty much any IrDA device, you can customize Today's screen
using Themes (guess Dashboard isn't going to like that too much),
there is Terminal Service Client, Word has a spell check (and
word count), IE becomes IE4 (better access with XML support...
also Java Script 1.1 will now work... That's cool!) LAN access,
and many many more cool features!!
I will report on that more as soon as I get my iPAQ upgraded
(for $30, that's really worth it. Think about it... when you
upgrade your desktop, it isn't free either!! Well, I think it's
only a small fee to pay for the great work that Microsoft did
on this new OS...).

- Jornada
560:
This is it, the new HP Jornada has finally been announced.
I still haven't gotten my hands on one but for now, you can
read the first impression on Pocketnow.com.
Just as a note, I'm a little disappointed that this model only
comes with a Type I CF :(. Oh, well, it still looks good!
Your
comments.
- iPAQ
upgrades:
Last minute info from Compaq! They just announced the
availability of a Pocket PC 2002 upgrade for the H3600 and H3100
series. You'll have to spend some $30 to get it (free if you
got your iPAQ after September 6 and before November 30th). Pre-orders
start on Sept 17th but it won't be shipped until mid-October!
As far as inside news, there are some more rumors:
A new iPAQ H3800 series is being talked about. The new series
will (from an unknown source) feature a SD Slot in addition
to the current CF slot, multifunction buttons, the speaker will
be placed on top... and it will use the same Expansion Pack
as the current model!!! Compaq will also be selling a H3700
series that will be similar to the current H3600 but will have
Pocket PC 2002 already installed (no word on wether it will
have 32MB of ROM). Voice recognition might be an option!!! All
that is speculation but I wouldn't be too surprised!!! More
on that should come from Compaq around October 4th.
That's too much news in one day for me!!! One good thing about
the upgrade is that you'll be able to choose wether or not you
want to install MSN messenger (I don't use it... so, I don't
have to install it!!!).
More
info on the upgrade here.

5th 2001:
- Nice
little calculator for engineers!
Here is a nice little calculator that deserves a note!
Aidem
Systems Inc. just released it today. This is a simple scientific
calculator but it is free!!! Ha, don't you love that?? Anyhow,
we're slowly getting there, but I shall say that I am still
waiting for a TI92-like software application. And if you are
asking, the answer is yes, I have to carry that sucker with
me (TI 92 plus)... no wonder why I love to see application such
as this little one! Anyone for a TI92 emulator? Or just some
program able to handle multi-variable functions (plotting would
be a plus!)!!!

Note that the second picture has nothing to do with a
calculator... it's just another cool application developped by
the same company... You can now play the piano on the road :)
Your
comments.
- New
iPAQ, what's the deal????
Rumors, rumors! I hate that so much. But here it is:
from a French executive working on the PocketPC team at Compaq
France, there is some bad and good news!
Bad news: if you had purchased your iPAQ before September 6
(yeah, that's tomorrow) then you might get charged to receive
a Merlin update disc (ahh, like it's not gonna be posted for
free on the web anyways!).
More bad news: the older iPAQs (the one now!) only have 16MB
of ROM, apparently not enough for the new OS. So, what to do?????
Should I send my iPAQ for ROM upgrade (Note: PCE2000 does that
and charges $179.... not cheap though they will do a great job
doing the upgrade!). Should I buy a new iPAQ???? NO.... STOP...
Good news: the programs that won't apparently install in ROM
will easily fit on RAM! What that means: you'll have to install
(by yourself, like a big boy) applications such as WMP, transcriber
(wait, that's already in RAM isn't it??) and some others...
Voice recognition, maybe!!! What would be smart to do.... I
couldn't stress how nice it is to have a big storage devices,
thus upgrading to 64MB or even 128MB would be nice!!! You can
get your iPAQ upgraded to 64MB for dirt cheap nowadays so why
wait?? Well, at least wait until the 6th, Microsoft
will unveil its new PPC OS and by then we should be a little
more sure about what will happen next...

- PocketPC
summit!!!
It was my duty to report on PocketPC's future to our
(well your!!!) dear President. In an effort to make him understand.....
Alright, I'll stop with the BS! Labor day weekend... on Saturday
I had some fun (yes something else than dealing with PPCs) and
went to Madam Tussaud (the popular wax museum... in NYC) and
took some pictures of myself (casual clothing... for once) and
some celebrities... Here are a couple of them... not to mention
that I would have loved to meet George W. Bush and talk to him
about my current status in the US (ahhhh, I'd like a Green Card,
please!!!)... Anyways, enjoy!!

ALL iPAQ users:
Here is some very good news for all iPAQ users. A new
vibrating battery solution will soon be available. Pdaordie.com
has come up with an extended battery for iPAQ that will double
the battery life of your iPAQ, not to mention that you'll enjoy
vibrating alert!!! The price has not been announced yet, but
I will get back to this very soon. The kit will be DIY.

- iPAQ
remote:
Here is something I was waiting for: a TV/VCR/Stereo
remote control software. This application will let you control
your TV or other audio video equipment with your iPAQ! Awesome...
too bad it's not compatible with my Sharp's equipment yet!!!
Note that several PocketPC versions are available though the
iPAQ was the only one tested!!!
