PCE2000 iPAQ mods

PCE2000, a company that has been in business for quite some time now, has looked at the main Compaq iPAQ issues and tried to come with a solution for them.

They have now been offering several modifications that will literally transform your favorite mobile device!

  • ROM/RAM upgrades:

This has to be the best thing you can get for your 32/16MB iPAQ. PCE2000 now offers RAM upgrades for your iPAQ. The following upgrades are available:

    RAM: 16 to 32MB, or 128MB; 32MB to 64MB or 128MB.

    ROM: 16 to 32MB

factory RAM, Board without RAM, and the new RAM modules.

PCE2000 is offering great RAM upgrades and also guarantee their work up to 90 days, which might be a great alternative to those whose Compaq warranty will soon be expiring.

The 64MB upgrade will simply transform your H3650 into the newer H3670. The latest firmware will be installed on the ROM as well.

The 128MB is a little more interesting. Though priced at a whopping $349, your iPAQ will be the only PocketPC with that much RAM on the market. The RAM will be split into two; let me explain.
The current PocketPC OS (Windows CE) isn't capable of recognizing more than 64MB of RAM. PCE2000 has developed a software that will create a "fictitious storage card" where the additional 64MB will be available. In other words, your 128MB iPAQ will see 64MB in regular storage and 64MB as an "onboard" storage card. You'll also be able to use an extra storage device through your expansion pack. Quite ingenious should I say! Can't wait to get some more $$ and get the surgery done on my H3650!!!!!

As of now, a ROM upgrade will not bring anything to regular users running the Windows CE OS though it is said that Merlin will be benefiting from the full 32MB or ROM. Linux OS will also use the full 32MB of ROM, and PCE2000 is currently working on applications that will write to ROM (allowing you to store and even delete "factory" applications).

  • Screen dust:

This has to be the most common problem to iPAQ users. Well PCE2000 has come with a very efficient solution that will eradicate any particles left on your screen. They charge a mere $25 to perform the repair on your PocketPC and will also seal the screen to prevent any further intrusions.

Here you can see the "weird" looking Laminer Flow Unit
that will get rid of the dust. The second picture shows the
anti-static tape applied to the side of the screen.

  • Stylus lock:

This has been known to be a problem but PCE2000 makes an interesting part that will simply replace the original stylus latch. This part is constructed in aluminum and will replace the much weaker plastic piece... You can choose to have the operation done by PCE2000 or yourself. The former will cost you $25 while the DIY kit is sold for $49.
I will try to get back to this and review the installation process as soon as I receive my kit!

  • Power door fix:

I had problems with the power door on my first iPAQ unit. PCE2000 will take care of this problem free of charge with any other modification!

  • Conclusion:

PCE2000 offers great solutions for your worn out iPAQ or simply if you need more out your PocketPC. They also carry Refurbished iPAQs with the upgrades already performed!!!.... I'd like one of the 128MB RAM, 32MB ROM with Stylus lock and Screen rework please!!!...
