The Pocket PC 2002 operating system as well as the previous PPC OS do feature a default file explorer utility. But what are the real advantages of using a third party application to browse your files, and folders? Should you be spending $15 for something that already exists on the Pocket PC? Well in this review I will take a closer look at Aidem's File Explorer v2.

The first limitation and probably the most important one on the Microsoft file explorer utility is its inability to display hidden files such as .dll or .cpl. Many of you have probably installed some sort of Today's screen add-on and tried to remove it and got an error message saying the dll file couldn't be removed. Well one solution to completely remove the application in the event the uninstall program doesn't complete the task, is to rename the dll file and soft reset the device. After reboot, you'll be able to delete the renamed file thus deleting all components left of the application. This scenario isn't possible with the default file explorer as the dll files aren't visible.

The second problem you might face is the deletion of items making them unrecoverable. The default file explorer will simply delete any RAM item (or Storage Card files) that you select for deletion without any undo feature; the file will be permanently lost. Fortunately Aidem File Explorer v2 offers a feature similar to the recycle bin on your desktop. It will allow you to restore deleted files, something that could become very important one of these days (you never know when you'll need this feature but trust me you wil).

But Aidem didn't stop there. They went further providing the user with many different options such as the location of the Recycle Bin, its size and the lifetime of deleted items.
One other great feature is the ability to encrypt files using 128bit encryption (if you have the MSFT High Encryption Pack installed) directly from the File Explorer.
You'll also have the ability to save the selected location to your favorites; for instance, you might want to add your picture folder for quick access through Pocket IE.
The only feature that was missing from Aidem's File Explorer and that is available on the PPC File Explorer utility is the browsing of network shares. Maybe future revision of the software will have this feature making Aidem File Explorer event better.

Aidem went further than most developers and included an incredible amount of options for such a basic but useful tool. Quite honestly, I would love to see Aidem's File Explorer factory install on all devices (that's how good I thought it was).

Finally, I'd like to thank Kingdom Kao for sending me a copy of the application. Keep up with the great work.
